Once Upon a Time in Mexico (DVD)
With ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO, filmmaker Robert Rodriguez follows the further adventures of El Mariachi (Antonio Banderas), the guitar-and-gunslinging hero who has been leading a quiet life, but longs to get revenge for the murder of his love (Salma Hayek). When quirky CIA agent Sands (Johnny Depp) roots out El Mariachi for a special assignment, he comes out with pistols blazing. Soon, a retired FBI agent (Ruben Blades), a drug kingpin (Willem Dafoe), a criminal on the run (Mickey Rourke), and a double-dealing federale (Eva Mendes) are all in on the action, which involves a plot to kill the Mexican president and shift the balance of power in Mexico.Handling the writing, direction, cinematography, and just about everything else, Rodriguez has crafted a tribute to the spaghetti Western films of Sergio Leone by placing his outlaw hero from DESPERADO and EL MARIACHI in an epic setting populated by numerous characters. Although it can be challenging to keep track of the unfolding subplots, the scenes involving Depp's badly dressed secret agent are the most intriguing and entertaining. Meanwhile Banderas eases back into the lead as the vengeful Mariachi, and Hayek and Blades make the most of their small but significant roles.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseWidescreen - 1.78Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 - English Dolby Digital 2.0 - FrenchAdditional Release Material: Audio Commentary - 1. This artfully constructed slasher film has retained a cult following since its brief theatrical release in America in 1973. Gary Sherman (WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE) intended the scuzzy, atmospheric work to be an allegory for the changes brought by the collapse of the British class system.A young couple spies a sickly drunk in London's underground railway system. The man is discovered to be a displaced member of British upper class, and his story leads to the unearthing of a literally underground society. The British police (led by character actor Donald Pleasence) follow a trail of tube station crimes and stumble upon a group of former subway construction workers who were trapped in a tunnel collapse during the Victorian era. Those who survived resort to extreme measures, including Cannibalism--and now they must be stopped. The film is notable for its use of gore and visceral detail to tell a story, and particularly for its imaginative sound design. Deeply influential on early 21st-century films like 28 DAYS LATER, RAW MEAT is an unusual horror film that demonstrates depth and thoughtfulness.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAnamorphic Widescreen - 1.85Audio: Dolby Digital Mono - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Trailers - 1.
