Gladiator (DVD)(WS)
Ridley Scott (BLADE RUNNER, ALIEN) transports Hollywood to second-century Rome in this rousing historical epic that proudly harkens back to such films as BEN-HUR and SPARTACUS. Russell Crowe plays Maximus, a Roman general who leads the troops in conquering Germania for the empire. When an aging Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) tells Maximus that he`d like him to rule Rome once he`s gone, a classic confrontation ensues between the brave and charming soldier--who wants to return home to his wife, son, and farm--and the jealous and conniving Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), the emperor`s only son, who is thirsty for power. Bought as a slave by the profiteering Proximo (Oliver Reed, in his last role), Maximus must kill or be killed in the ring, battling to save not only himself but the future of the very empire that he loves and honors. The film features a terrific battle sequence (that recalls the beginning of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN), huge crowd scenes of thousands of people, and even a little romance, albeit mostly taboo. The impeccably choreographed gladiator scenes are violent yet thrilling, flashing by like lightning. GLADIATOR is a glorious spectacle filled with heart and soul.

King of the B's, director Roger Corman shot this crazy beat-era classic in a mere two days, but it packs plenty of inspired lunacy and clever bits in its 70-minute running time. Jonathan Haze stars as clumsy assistant florist Seymour, who saves his job in Mr. Mushnik's skid-row flower shop when he brings in a unique man-eating plant. The problem is, it's a very hungry plant; every night it opens its huge jaws and demands to be fed, forcing poor Seymour to take to the street in search of victims, lest he disappoint his boss and his adoring girlfriend, Audrey (Jackie Joseph). From a zingy script by Charles Griffith, this hilarious black comedy overflows with great ideas and characters: Corman regular Dick Miller plays a hipster who eats flowers, and a very young Jack Nicholson takes a memorable turn as a masochistic dental patient. DRAGNET-style detective Joe Fink (Wally Campo) narrates as he slowly begins to track the killer down. This oft-revived favorite still generates plenty of laughs and chills, deserving of repeat viewings. A musical version debuted off-Broadway in 1982 and led to a film starring Rick Moranis and Steve Martin.DVD Features:Region 1 EncodingJewel Case

Told in an engaging collage of direct camera confessionals, flashbacks, roundtable discussions, and montages, Rob Reiner's THE STORY OF US, a sweet romantic comedy featuring solid performances by Bruce Willis and Michelle Pfeiffer, examines the difficulty of preserving marriage in America and the dual lives married couples often must endure. The us are Ben and Katie Jordan (Willis and Pfeiffer), a professional, and by all appearances happily married, suburban couple with two well-adjusted children, Erin and Josh; the story, however, is that their marriage is actually crumbling at an alarming rate, a truth they endeavor to hide from their loving kids. Luckily, they can postpone the admission of dissolution because of the children's departure to summer camp, with the possibility that things will work out in the ensuing months. However, as time passes, tempers flare, Ben moves out, Katie meets a charming divorce at a cooking class, and, as the inevitable return of Erin and Josh closes to a week, there is no apparent hope of resolution. Will the two be forced to present their kids with an awful fact of life, or can they rediscover their passion for each other and renew their love?DVD Features:Regions 0Keep CaseLetterbox - 1.85Dual LayerAudio: Dolby Digital - 5.1 - English DTS Surround - 5.1 - English Dolby Digital - 3.1 - FrenchAdditional Release Material: Spotlight on Location Commentary with Director Rob Reiner Production Notes Cast and Filmmakers Biographies Trailer - Theatrical
