When John Huston left for Africa to shoot THE AFRICAN QUEEN, he asked his friend, writer Peter Viertel, to come along with him, ostensibly to help him polish James Agee's script. Eventually, Viertel wrote a fictionalized account of his experience with Huston in Africa, WHITE HUNTER, BLACK HEART. Almost 30 years later, Clint Eastwood made a film of that novel. Eastwood plays director John Wilson, a man clearly modeled after Huston. Wilson is a gregarious and tremendously engaging character, very different from the strong, silent image of Eastwood his fans have grown to know. At the same time, like many of Clint's characters, Wilson is a man who lives by his own rules. He goes to Africa, far more interested in shooting an elephant on safari than in shooting his movie. His real obsession seems to be his image of himself as a man of action. Wilson is a rascal, somewhat admirable in his ideals, but he's also selfish, stubborn, and irresponsible. Eventually, his pursuit leads to tragedy in Eastwood's most scathing and powerful critique of the macho image he himself has built a career on. Based on the true story of the only escape from Alcatraz--a maximum-security prison built on an island located in shark-infested waters to contain the most dangerous, hardcore criminals and most gifted escape artists in the U.S.--ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ stars Clint Eastwood as inmate Frank Morris, the man who plans the escape. When he arrives at Alcatraz in 1960, Morris has an interview with the pompous warden (Patrick McGoohan), who assures him that the prison is escape-proof, well aware of his record of prison breaks. Upon entering the prison population, Morris makes friends with some of the more human inmates, including Doc (Roberts Blossom), an old lifer who paints in his cell; and English (Paul Benjamin), the prison librarian. Less engaging is Wolf (Bruce Fischer), a huge prisoner who tries to stab Morris during a knife fight in the exercise yard after the latter had refused the hulk's generous offer to become his punk. Morris emerges from his punishment in solitary to find that his old friends, the Anglin brothers Jack (Fred Ward) and Clarence (Jack Thibeau), have arrived. He knows that with them he can make a break. This meditative, deliberately paced film might be the only Zen prison movie on record. As the US prepares for D-Day, a secret branch of the Allied military begins its disinformation campaign.
U.S. Military Intelligence does not know that a Nazi mole has infiltrated its ranks. Novice American spy Jeff Lassiter inadvertently tells the mole, who uses the alias Bill O'Connell, that the Americans intend to invade Normandy, not Holland, as the enemies suspect. As O'Connell travels to France, Bob Sharkey, the head of Military Intelligence, parachutes into that same country to capture a Nazi sympathizer who has the keys to an Axis rocket launcher. Unfortunately for Sharkey, however, O'Connell beats him there and demands to know the Allies' true strategy.A group of Allied agents working undercover in occupied Paris struggle to infiltrate German files in order to discover the location of a rocket launching site before the D-Day invasion.
