Zak Gibbs (Jesse Bradford) is a regular teenager who's only got girls and hot rods on his mind, but all that changes when he finds a watch developed by his scientist dad, Dr. George Gibbs (Robin Thomas). One day, while raking leaves with his friend Francesca (Paula Garces), he discovers the watch has special powers. It goes into hypertime, speeding up the molecular structure of whoever's wearing it, so the rest of the world looks frozen, but is actually just moving much slower. At first Zak and Francesca have a lot of fun playing pranks on people while in hypertime, but soon they realize they are in grave danger. A corrupt corporate drone, Henry Gates (Michael Beihn), wants to use the watch for evil deeds and decides to kill Zak, his dad, and Francesca in the process. Gates kidnaps Dr. Gibbs and Zak and Francesca enlist the help of a kooky scientist, Dr. Earl Dopler (French Stewart, THIRD ROCK FROM THE SUN). The rest is high action camp; it's like THE MATRIX for teens. Director Brian De Palma returns to familiar terrain with FEMME FATALE, a loopy, sexy thriller that plays like a greatest hits of the controversial director's tics, tricks, and obsessions. Here the story follows a beautiful seductress (Rebecca Romjin-Stamos) who betrays her cohorts during an elaborate diamond heist at the Cannes Film Festival, then disappears to America under the stolen identity of a dead French girl to whom she bears an uncanny resemblance. Seven years later she returns to Paris when her American husband (Peter Coyote) accepts a position as French ambassador. That's when Antonio Banderas, as a goofy photographer, enters the picture and becomes her lover and dupe in another elaborate scheme. Along the way there's steamy lesbianism, misogynistic violence, split-screens, double-crosses, time loops, VERTIGO-style stalking, a hot striptease, and plenty of dark comedy and sly homage to other films, all in the classic De Palma tradition. His fans should be thrilled, as this harkens back to the director's DRESSED TO KILL, BLOW OUT, and BODY DOUBLE days. Ken Takakura stars in the Japanese action film NEVER GIVE UP (YASEI NO SHOMEI, aka PROOF OF THE WILD). He plays Ajisawa, who is part of a top-secret military organization trying to cover-up a series of accidental murders that occurred during a training exercise. The only survivor is a young boy whom Ajisawa adopts as his own. Years later, after his retirement from the military, he finds himself forced to return to the scene of the murders to investigate the disappearance of a journalist who was looking into them. He inadvertently reveals his part in the killings, leading to his arrest and the military's decision to eliminate him, placing his adopted son in danger as well. NEVER GIVE UP is an action film about finding redemption.
