The ULTIMATE HERO collection pays homage to Saturday afternoon television matinees with a trio of vintage sword-and-sandal epics (low-budget Italian films from the 1950s and `60s that centered around Greco-Roman mythology and featured campily primitive special effects). As a sequel to 1959`s HERCULES, HERCULES UNCHAINED (1960) finds genre stalwart Steve Reeves reprising his role as the legendary hero--this time struggling to restore his memory after being bewitched by a Theban princess. American bodybuilder Reeves also stars in THE GIANT OF MARATHON (1959) as an Athenian warrior who saves his city from an invading Persian army. And in SAMSON AND THE SEVEN MIRACLES OF THE WORLD (1961), Gordon Scott headlines as the hirsute strongman who performs heroic feats to save a Chinese princess from marauding Mongolians.

Stephen Norrington's THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN begins in 1899 London where, due to some cataclysmic events in England and Germany, the world is on the brink of war. Mycroft Holmes (Richard Roxburgh) is sent by the British government to round up various figures from Victorian-era literature in an attempt to find some solution. First on the list is explorer Allan Quatermain (Sean Connery), quickly installed as leader of the ramshackle outfit. Among the plethora of mythical figures joining Quatermain are The Invisible Man, Captain Nemo, Jekyll and Hyde, Dorian Gray, and many others. Initially the League are sent to Prague to prevent a series of bombs from exploding, causing some spectacular set pieces as the merry band of rogues use all their special skills to fend off the evil forces. This is only the start of their journey however, and there are plenty of surprises for these courageous battlers, not least when they discover who is really behind all the chaos they have tried so hard to control.Working with material from comic book veteran Alan Moore (who also penned FROM HELL), director Norrington (BLADE) draws on some interesting traits and legends from his characters, such as Dorian Gray's painting and Dr. Jekyll's potion. Making sure each member is far from infallible, Norrington paints a sympathetic portrait of flawed heroes battling against the odds, with some spectacular action sequences, and humorous asides.

Little Emily and her family adopt a bear cub and name it Masha. They raise Masha, and release her into the woods. After about three years, 11 year old Emily gets lost deep in the forest all alone. It's dark out there and she stumbles and gets knocked unconscious. Emily wakes up and to her surprise, Masha is there cuddling her and keeping her warm and safe. Now, Emily must find her way home with the security and help of Masha. Unfortunately it isn't as easy as it seems--there are all sorts of wild animals in the forest. Cougars, wolves, other bears, and even bear-hunters are all over. The two keep each other safe throughout their dangerous adventure in order to make sure Emily gets home safe and sound. In a grim future America, Maggie (Bridget Fonda), a beautiful young street punk, is about to be executed for killing a cop during a robbery, and is given the choice between death or becoming a government assassin. Maggie is given a new identity, becomes the seductive Claudia, and is sent to Venice, California, where she begins her new life. But the training takes only too well: the formerly amoral murderess proceeds to fall in love with a photographer (Dermot Mulroney) and develop a conscience. Now she wants out, but the government isn't about to let her go without a fight. Anyone who grew up in Southern California will talk with both nostalgia and frustration about the periodic summers of drought in which the oppressive heat is exacerbated by a shortage of its antidote--fresh water. In 1975, a clan of scruffy, rebellious teens found a way to turn this dearth to their advantage, using the sloping bowl of empty suburban swimming pools to create a new underground sport--skateboarding. The combination of a pulsating punk rock soundtrack, dynamic skateboarding sequences, and a gripping narrative combine in a forceful sweep that keeps viewers glued to the screen.
